About the Sandy, Utah Area

Welcome to Sandy, Utah

Sandy Real Estate

The fifth-largest municipality in the state, the City of Sandy is located in Salt Lake County, Utah. In 2008, Real Salt Lake will be calling a new soccer only stadium home amongst Sandy. Sandy was given its name by Brigham Young due to the ground's heavy thirst.

A Look at Sandy's Past
While the Shoshone, Bannock and Paiute Indians used the area of present day Sandy for many years as a travelway to get from their winter Utah Lake area homes to fish in the summer in Bear Lake, the first permanent settlers arrived in the late 1860s/early 1870s. Land was plentiful and a lot less crowded than in the northern end of the Salt Lake Valley.

Farmers were drawn in by the thirsty soil but mining was actually what drove Sandy's economy in the beginning. Nearby silver mining made Sandy real estate a natural supply station, luring many entrepreneurs to build saloons, hotels and even brothels for tired, thirsty and hungry miners to spend their newfound wealth. Three large smelters made Sandy the biggest smelting operation in the area for many, many years.

The mines dried up by the 1890s, but Sandy soldiered on, thanks in large part to its location and the resilience of its residents. They quickly took up agriculture as a means to make money. The railroad helped bring Salt Lake City closer so people could continue living in Sandy, but work in Salt Lake.

Sandy's incorporation in 1893 pretty much abolished the dirty mining town of its beginnings, replacing the single miners instead with more respectable families and businesses. By the turn of the century, the old hotels and saloons had almost disappeared completely.

Sandy experienced another population boom in the 1960s and 1970s, when families and businesses discovered the beauty and family-friendly living. This is how Sandy continues on today.

Sandy's Educational System
The Jordan School District oversees public education for Sandy's students. There are 18 elementary schools, six middle schools, three high schools and the special K-12 K.I.D.S. program occupying Sandy. For parents who prefer private education for their children, there are 9 private schools to choose from.

Sandy's Local Economy
The main businesses behind Sandy's economical force are in the financial, medical and data entry fields. The largest employers located amongst Sandy real estate are Discover Financial (financial services), Becton Dickinson (medical products manufacturer), ACS Business Processing (data entry), Alta View Hospital and Jordan Commons (an entertainment complex). Some of the other companies conducting business in Sandy are in the construction and retail sales industry. Sandy's economic growth shows no sign of slowing down.

Fun in Sandy
Sandy has so much to offer its visitors and residents for entertainment and recreation that you would be hard pressed to be bored here. The Sandy City Amphitheater is a great place to enjoy musical concerts from all kinds of genres. The Alta Canyon Sports Center offers swimming, fitness, exercise, personal training and summer programs for kids and adults as well as body, mind and wellness workshops and special events throughout the year.

If you are into hiking, Sandy offers over 20 trail systems and trail heads to choose from. There are also 22 parks sitting on Sandy real estate, including a dog park and a skate park. There are also some great places for fishing, rock climbing and running all throughout Sandy.

For the golf enthusiast, there are four different golf courses to choose from: River Oaks Golf Course, Schneiter's Pebble Brook Golf Course, Hidden Valley Country Club and Willow Creek Country Club. River Oaks is a municipal, 18 hole, par 70 course. Schneiter's is a public, 18 hole, par 68 course. Both Hidden Valley and Willow Creek are private clubs: Hidden Valley has two courses (9 holes/par 36 and 18 holes/par 72) and Willow Creek is an 18 hole, par 72 course.

In the winter, there are four ski resorts in the Sandy area that have the greatest snow on earth: Alta, Brighton, Snowbird and Solitude. The best snowboarding and skiing anywhere in the United States can be found for those who Ski Utah.

The largest shopping center in Utah, South Towne Center is over 1 million square feet of shopping, dining and entertainment. The anchor stores are Mervyns, JCPenney, Macy's and Dillard's, but you will also find other fabulous shopping at American Eagle Outfitters, Bath and Body Works, Eddie Bauer, Gap, Gymboree, Hollister Co, Mrs Fields, REI and much, much more. For the hungry shopper, there are several restaurants to choose from as well. From standard fare, such as Subway, Arby's and Hot Dog on a Stick, to sit down restaurants, like Chili's and Mimi's Cafe, everyone will be able to find something to satisfy their needs.

Come see what makes residents of Sandy smile. Once you are here, you won't ever want to leave.

Real Estate Tips
Cosmetic Improvements >Sunshine Sells

When your home is being shown, you want prospective buyers to feel good as soon as they step into the living room. It pays to give special attention to maximizing the amount of light in your home because dark homes are depressing to many people. When prospective buyers give real estate agents feedback on the homes that we show, they often cite a light, airy feeling as a major attraction.

Begin your preparation for showing your home by cleaning the windows and curtains thoroughly. Open the drapes and blinds to let the sunshine in. Even on a bright day it helps to turn on some lights in the main rooms of the house. If you are using shades or heavy drapes to eliminate a less-than-perfect view, you may want to consider replacing them with translucent curtains in a light color. Sunshine definitely helps to sell homes!
