Way Back When
In 1847, Mormon pioneers first came to the Salt Lake Valley. The Mississippi Saints, another pioneer group, came to the area in the fall of 1848 and began to develop a settlement. The settlement was known by different names, such as Cottonwood, South Cottonwood, Big Cottonwood and the Mississippi Ward. By the 1860s, there were more than 20 families living in the area. The area was mostly agricultural until a body of ore was found in Park City and Little Cottonwood Canyon in 1869. Because of its location and easy access to the railroad, the town's first smelter was built in 1870. Over the next 30 years, Murray real estate was home to the largest smelters in the region.
In 1870, the town got its first post office: South Cottonwood Post Office. Soon, the area began to change. The railroad came to town, territorial roads were established, trolley transportation was available and smelting expanded. In 1883, the post office's name changed to Murray Post Office, renaming the town Murray. The town was named after Eli Murray, a civil war general and governor of Utah from 1880 to 1886.
The City of Murray officially incorporated on January 3, 1903.
