About Draper
Welcome > Local Info > About Draper ...

Welcome to Draper, Utah
Draper Real Estate

Draper, Utah may be a quiet country town, but it's made up of sophisticated residents that include doctors, lawyers, factory workers, farmers, teachers, entertainers, musicians and businessmen, creating a diverse mix.  Residents seek Draper real estate as a safe haven from urban sprawl and the daily rat race.  Many choose Draper homes because it's a place like no other.  A fertile valley floor and rugged mountain peaks may be what creates the setting for Draper, but it's the people that give the city its spirit and personality.   The city is being guided toward the next century by young, positive and hard-working families.  The best two words to describe Draper residents are "young" and "prosperous".

Draper is located in Salt Lake County, 25 minutes south of Salt Lake City, along Interstate 15.  Draper real estate is part of two metropolitan cities, Salt Lake City Metropolitan and Provo-Orem Metropolitan.  In 2000, Draper was the state's fastest growing city, with a population of 25,220 residents.  Draper real estate continues to grow today.

Historic Draper
Rich in colorful character and pioneer heritage, Draper real estate was founded in the fall of 1849, when Ebenezer Brown brought his cattle to graze on tall grass in the area once known as South Willow Creek.  Ebenezer soon brought his wife and children to the land where they settled and raised cattle to sell to immigrants that were going west to California for gold.  William Draper III was next to the area with his family.  His wife was a midwife/doctor known as Aunt Betsy who did so many good deeds that she is still remembered today.

By 1852, the town had grown to 20 families.  The first post office was built in 1854, with Phoebe Brown running it.  Soon, the town was renamed Draperville after William Draper III.  William was the first Elder of the town's Mormon congregation.  Also in 1854, trouble with local Natives caused Ebenezer to donate land for a fort site.  Now, the Draper Historical park is on the site of the old fort.

Businesses have flourished in Draper for many years.  Some businesses have included mink ranching, dairying, egg producing and poultry men.  Also, sheep-men once built some of the city's most beautiful Victorian homes, which can still be found around the city today.

Draper Education
Students living in Draper real estate are served by the Jordan School District.  This is the largest of Utah's 40 school districts, with 85 schools serving kindergarten through 12th grades.  There are 58 elementary schools, 17 middle schools and 10 high schools in the district.  The district is committed to providing a quality education for each student.  That is seen in test scores, as they are consistently above the national average.  High school graduation here is the highest in the United States.

There are also several private schools in the area.  Higher education needs are met by Ameritech College, Numont University and Hawthorne University.  All of these are less than 10 miles from Draper.

Things to See and Do in Draper
Draper is ideally located between Salt Lake City and Provo, Utah against the Wasatch Mountains, giving residents plenty recreational opportunities.  Salt Lake County Hang Gliding Park is the best spot in the nation for hang gliding.  Other great activities include horseback riding, jogging, hiking and biking on the many nearby mountain trails as you enjoy breathtaking views of the Salt Lake Valley.  There are 67 miles of trails within the city and, since Utah is famous for its powder light snow, there are many locations for skiing and snowboarding near Draper real estate such as Solitude, Brighton, Snowbird and Alta.   Park City is a little further but well worth the drive.

For great family fun, visit Boondocks Family Fun Center.  The center offers eight acres of exciting activities, which include miniature golf under a Utah arch, go-cart racing, bumper boats, roller coaster and flight simulation, batting cages, laser tag and rock climbing.

Draper has plenty of open space to enjoy along with public parks that are well maintained and include playgrounds, picnic areas, ball fields and ball courts.  There are a variety of shopping centers and restaurants in Draper.  Restaurants are all over town to satisfy every taste-bud.  Shopping areas include antique shops, specialty shops and everything in-between.  Many other great activities can be found in just a few short minutes' trip to Salt Lake City.

Draper real estate is truly the perfect place to call home.  It has everything you need at hand or close by.

Real Estate Tips
Buying Land and New Construction >Buying New or Buying Old

New homes typically have a higher sales price than comparable existing homes, and buyers are usually willing to spend more on a new home because of lower maintenance costs. Builders' warranties on new homes, when combined with a new roof, appliances, and major systems, usually make major repairs unnecessary and help to counter a slower initial rate of appreciation.

Census Bureau Housing Surveys suggests that operating costs are lowest for brand new homes and slightly higher for relatively new existing homes. Operating costs per square foot of living space are consistently higher for progressively older existing homes. Utility costs represent the largest factor in operating costs. Energy consumption per square foot depends on the size of the home, the insulation and quality of the windows, air leakage and the efficiency of the furnace.

New homes require fewer expenditures for routine maintenance. The cost of maintenance first increases with age, then declines, so you will generally spend less maintaining a home built before 1960 than for a home built between 1970 and 1975.
